    • Toluene CAS 108-88-3 Tol

    Toluene Methylbenzene CAS 108-88-3

    Description

Toluene is a colorless, clear liquid with a characteristic benzene-like aromatic odor. It belongs to aromatic hydrocarbons, is insoluble in water, but is miscible with ethanol, ether, acetone, chloroform, and most organic solvents. Toluene exhibits high lipophilicity and volatility; its vapor density is heavier than air, allowing it to spread along the ground, presenting high flammability and explosion hazards when exposed to open flames or high heat.

    Reactions

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: Due to the electron-donating effect of the methyl group (activating group), hydrogen atoms on the benzene ring are readily substituted by halogens, nitro groups, or sulfonic acid groups, primarily yielding ortho- and para-isomer.

Side-Chain Oxidation: In the presence of catalysts or strong oxidizing agents, the methyl group on the side chain can be progressively oxidized to benzaldehyde or benzoic acid.

Hydrogenation: Under heating and pressure in the presence of catalysts (such as nickel or platinum), toluene reacts with hydrogen to form methylcyclohexane.

    Applications

    • Coatings, Paints, and Ink Solvents: Used as an excellent organic solvent for dissolving resins, alkyd resins, nitrocellulose, and various printing inks. Function: Adjusts system viscosity, optimizes fluidity, and evaporates rapidly after application to ensure a smooth and uniform coating film.
    • Organic Synthesis Intermediates: Widely used in the production of benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, benzyl chloride, dyes, and TDI (toluene diisocyanate, core raw material for polyurethane). Function: Provides a highly reactive aromatic hydrocarbon skeleton as a foundational raw material for synthesizing complex fine chemicals.
    • Adhesives and Cleaning Agents: Applied in footwear manufacturing, rubber processing, and degreasing/surface cleaning of metal components. Function: Rapidly strips and removes surface oils, waxes, and residual colloids through strong penetration and dissolving power.
    • Gasoline Additive: Used as a high-octane blending component in the petroleum refining industry. Function: Enhances gasoline knock resistance and improves engine combustion efficiency.

    Storage Environment Requirements

    • Warehouse Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated specialized hazardous materials warehouse, away from fire and heat sources.
    • Temperature Control: Recommended storage temperature below $30^\circ\text{C}$, avoiding direct sunlight.
    • Container Management: Keep containers tightly sealed; packaging containers must be inspected regularly for leaks and deformation.
    • Storage Incompatibilities: Store separately from oxidizing agents, acids, halogens, etc.; mixed storage is strictly prohibited. Warehouses should be equipped with explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities.

    Handling & Precautions

    • Closed Operations & Ventilation: Production and application workshops must maintain good mechanical exhaust ventilation to prevent vapors from leaking into the air.
    • Personal Protection:
      • Respiratory System: Self-priming filter respirators (half-mask) must be worn when airborne concentrations exceed limits.
      • Eyes & Skin: Wear chemical safety goggles, anti-static protective workwear, and oil-resistant rubber gloves.
    • Fire & Explosion Prevention: Smoking is strictly prohibited. Iron tools that may generate sparks are forbidden in the work area. Transmission and filling pipelines/equipment must have reliable grounding devices to prevent static electricity accumulation.

    Formulations

Formulation 1: Polyurethane Wood Paint Thinner

    • Composition: Toluene (40%) + Butyl Acetate (30%) + Xylene (20%) + Cyclohexanone (10%)
    • Function: Toluene acts as the primary core solvent providing rapid dissolution rate, while multi-component synergy adjusts the overall volatilization gradient (balancing fast, medium, and slow drying) to effectively prevent coating defects such as blushing, pinholes, or sagging.

Formulation 2: Industrial Metal Surface Degreasing Cleaner

    • Composition: Toluene (70%) + Isopropanol (20%) + Acetone (10%)
    • Function: Combines toluene’s high dissolving capacity for mineral oils and lubricating greases with isopropanol’s wetting and stripping characteristics for polar soils, achieving high-efficiency rapid degreasing at room temperature.
