    Chemical Properties

    • Hygroscopic: Readily absorbs moisture from the air.
    • Weak Base: Urea acts as a weak Lewis base, capable of forming salts with strong acids.
    • pH Level: An aqueous solution of urea is neutral to slightly alkaline (pH 7.2 ~ 8.0).

    Chemical Reactions

    Hydrolysis: In the presence of water and heat (or the enzyme urease), urea hydrolyzes to form ammonia and carbon dioxide.

    Thermal Decomposition: When heated above its melting point (150 ~ 160℃), urea decomposes to yield biuret, ammonia, and cyanuric acid.

    Applications

    Acts as a high-density, slow-release nitrogen source. Once in the soil, it converts into ammonia and nitrate, providing essential nutrients that boost crop yields and promote vigorous plant growth.

    Serves as a primary raw material for manufacturing urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins. These thermosetting plastics are widely used as strong adhesives for plywood, particleboard, and molded plastic objects.

    Acts as a reducing agent in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. It reacts with harmful nitrogen oxides (NO_x) in diesel exhaust to produce harmless nitrogen gas and water vapor.

    Functions as a powerful humectant and keratolytic agent. It draws moisture into the skin and helps break down dead skin cells, making it a key ingredient in intensive moisturizers and eczema/psoriasis treatments.

    Storage

    • Role: Lower concentrations (~ 10%) act as humectants to hydrate dry skin. Higher concentrations (20% ~ 40%) are keratolytic, actively dissolving tough, calloused, or cracked skin.
    • Composition: Urea reacted with formaldehyde under mild alkaline conditions, followed by acid curing.
    • Role: Creates a highly cross-linked, durable resin matrix used to bond wood fibers together in the manufacturing of MDF and plywood.
